Mirror Koi
The mirror koi is a striking ornamental variant of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio), known for its unique scale pattern and reflective appearance. Unlike fully scaled koi, mirror koi are characterised by their irregular, patchy arrangement of large, shiny scales that often resemble mirrors - hence the name. These distinct scales typically run along the lateral line or appear sporadically across the body, making each fish visually unique.
Mirror koi originate from mirror carp, a domesticated form of common carp bred for reduced scaling. Over time, selective breeding gave rise to ornamental strains, including the mirror koi, priced for their aesthetic appeal in ponds and water gardens. While they are often grouped with other koi varieties, mirror koi are specifically recognised for their scale pattern rather than color. They come in a wide range of hues, including white, gold, orange, red and black.
Like other koi, mirror koi are hardy and adaptable, thriving in outdoor ponds with well-maintained water quality. They prefer water temperatures between 15°C and 25°C and can live in a wide pH range, though stable, clean water is essential for their health. With proper care, they can grow quite large, often reaching 60 to 90 centimetres in length and live for 20 to 30 years or more.
